  • Communicate regarding treatment, billing, and healthcare operations
  • Respond to inquiries and requests

Mobile Phone Numbers and Text Messaging

How we collect mobile numbers. Desert View Family Medicine, PLLC (“Desert View Family Medicine,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects mobile telephone numbers directly from you when you complete a new-patient or update-of-information form, register for or use our patient portal, request or schedule an appointment by telephone or through our website, provide the number to a member of our staff verbally or in writing, or reply to one of our text messages. We may also receive your mobile number from your health plan, from another treating provider, or from a personal representative you have authorized to act on your behalf.

How we use mobile numbers. We collect mobile phone numbers to communicate with patients via SMS and/or RCS text messages for purposes such as appointment scheduling, confirmations, and reminders; pre-visit instructions and check-in; billing and payment notifications; prescription and refill notifications; laboratory, imaging, and referral coordination; chronic care management and remote patient monitoring outreach; preventive care and recall reminders; and practice notifications such as office closures. We may also use the number to call you and to leave voice messages consistent with the instructions you have given us.

We do not sell, rent, or share your mobile number or your messaging consent. Your privacy is a priority. No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Information sharing to subcontractors in support services — such as our messaging platform vendor, our telecommunications carriers, and our electronic health record and practice management vendors — is permitted solely to the extent necessary for those vendors to deliver messages and provide services on our behalf. All other use case categories exclude text messaging originator opt-in data and consent; this information will not be shared with any third parties. We do not sell or rent your mobile phone number, and we will not use your number for marketing unrelated to your care without your express written consent.

Vendors and business associates. Vendors that create, receive, maintain, or transmit protected health information on our behalf are engaged under written business associate agreements as required by HIPAA and are permitted to use that information only to perform services for us.

Security of text messages. Text messages sent via SMS and RCS channels are not fully secure and may not be HIPAA-compliant; however, we take reasonable precautions to safeguard your privacy by restricting the content of these messages to non-sensitive notifications. Any messages containing detailed Protected Health Information (PHI) will be sent via a separate, secure messaging channel, such as our patient portal.

Your choices. Participation in text messaging is voluntary and is not a condition of receiving care from us. You may opt out of receiving text messages at any time by replying STOP to any message from us, by calling our office at (480) 324-0300, or by telling any member of our staff. You may also ask us to communicate with you only by a specific alternative method or at a specific alternative location, and we will accommodate reasonable requests as provided by HIPAA. If your mobile number changes, or you give up a number you previously provided, please notify us promptly so that messages intended for you are not sent to someone else. Complete terms are set out in our Text Message Terms of Service at https://desertviewfamilymedicine.com/text-message-terms/.

Retention of consent records. We retain records of your messaging consent and of any opt-out request for at least six years, consistent with our HIPAA documentation retention obligations and applicable telecommunications requirements.
